Entrevista: Kashpitzky
Crescendo em Tel Aviv, Kashpitzky estava traçando seu caminho musical como guitarrista em uma banda de metalcore. Em algum momento, porém, ele trocou amplificadores por baterias eletrônicas, quando realmente a coisa esquentou. Para completar uma educação musical formal em design de som, Kashpitzky mudou-se para Berlim e formou-se no SAE Institute.
Ele é um daqueles DJs que você não consegue classificar claramente em termos de som. Sempre mudando, em movimento, ele tem uma faixa para cada ocasião, permitindo que até sets longos nunca fiquem entediantes. Sua definição única de techno talvez seja melhor exemplificada em suas produções enérgicas, profundas e ao mesmo tempo groovy, muitas vezes combinando batidas quebradas com texturas orgânicas.
A esse respeito, vale a pena destacar seus lançamentos em selos como Be As One, de Shlomi Aber, MindTrip, Olympian entre outros estabelecidos em todo o mundo. Nós conversamos com ele para conhecê-lo um pouco mais a fundo e também para te trazer essa excelente recomendação de um artista de techno completo.
Olá, Kashpitzky. Obrigado por aceitar essa entrevista com a gente. Você foi introduzido a nós como “uma das figuras em ascensão mais quentes do Techno atualmente”. De fato, com o crescimento do estilo, temos visto muitos novos players ganhando atenção. Então, na sua visão, o que é preciso nos dias de hoje para que um artista se destaque dos demais em meio a esse turbilhão de novidades?
Kashpitzky: Olá, pessoal! Muito obrigado pelo convite antes de tudo. Eu concordo plenamente, hoje em dia existem muitos grandes produtores, veteranos e novatos, o que ajuda a manter vivo o verdadeiro legado do Techno.
É sempre bom ver alguns novos nomes que produzem Techno de qualidade, principalmente da geração mais jovem de nossa cena. Acredito que, para ser um artista de destaque neste jogo, você deve permanecer fiel a si mesmo e não seguir nenhuma tendência. A nossa evolução como artistas e a forma como mudamos é a nossa própria história! Ter uma visão e ser crítico sobre meu próprio trabalho sempre me ajuda a trabalhar mais no estúdio e a ter novas ideias. Procuro sempre mudar e não seguir nenhuma orientação específica e acredito que seja importante para manter a chama acesa.
Você é natural de Tel Aviv, certo? A cidade (e o país) tem um histórico bem forte quando falamos em música eletrônica, é a cidade natal de outros grandes nomes inclusive do Trance ou do Progressive House, como Astrix, Guy Gerber, Guy J… você foi influenciado por algum artista em específico do seu país quando começou a carreira? Seu início foi direto com o Techno ou você experimentou outros sons previamente?
A história de Tel Aviv e da música eletrônica começou há muito tempo, muito antes de eu nascer. Minha formação musical começou cedo como guitarrista. Minhas primeiras influências musicais foram Heavy Rock, Metal-Core, Djent, e tudo que consistisse em um som pesado, com distorções e groove! Como você mencionou, Trance & Progressive House era muito popular em Tel Aviv desde o final dos anos 90 e ainda é muito grande até hoje! Eu especificamente nunca consegui encontrar meu lugar nesses gêneros, então continuei focando no Metal e toquei em uma banda chamada “The Capital”.
Aos 17, quando finalmente comecei a sair e explorar a vida noturna de Tel Aviv, minha primeira experiência em um clube foi um momento que nunca esquecerei. O club costumava chamar de Deli. Tive a chance de ir lá apenas algumas vezes antes de fechar. Era uma pequena sala escura, cheia de fumaça, você nem conseguia ver o rosto do DJ. Todos ao meu redor eram mais velhos, claro, era uma sensação legal pra mim como um adolescente, ouvindo aquele minimal techno lento, tão repetitivo e tão elegante.
A vibe era insana e eu não conseguia entendê-la completamente, mas queria explorar! Havia tantos clubes no passado como The Block, Alphabet, Breakfast etc. Foram estes que me deram a oportunidade de ver DJs e shows dos melhores artistas por aí. Eu soube imediatamente do que gosto e do que não gosto. Morar em Tel Aviv me deu a chance de receber influências de DJs como DVS1, James Ruskin, Regis e outros que costumavam vir e se apresentar na cidade regularmente todos os anos.
Mesmo morando em Berlim atualmente, existe uma conexão da sua música com a cultura de Israel de alguma forma?
Tenho que ser honesto, meu som não tem muito a ver com a cultura e o som de Israel. O som principal da cidade não é bem o som que estou representando como DJ e como produtor. O som Techno puro em Tel Aviv hoje em dia não é mais do que um nicho, infelizmente. O som principal da cidade pode ir de House Music a Indie dance e Melodic Progressive Techno ou House.
Existem aquelas poucas festas na cidade que dão um espaço para os amantes do Techno e um palco para os artistas, mas não como há seis ou sete anos, o Techno era uma tendência quente que praticamente desapareceu em Israel. Mas devo dizer que a vida noturna em Tel Aviv é realmente incrível e tive a chance de ouvir alguns DJs residentes veteranos da cidade que tocavam Techno em sua forma mais pura!
Existem poucos DJs e produtores israelenses que são realmente incríveis, é claro, mas eu realmente sinto que os sons e a inspiração da minha produção vêm de fora da cidade, principalmente de artistas europeus, britânicos ou americanos.
E quando aconteceu essa mudança para Berlim? A decisão foi pensando na sua carreira como artista ou tiveram outros motivos envolvidos?
Eu moro em Berlim há três anos e meio. Primeiramente me mudei para estudar engenharia de som, o que não é realmente possível em Tel Aviv. Eu me formei no SAE Institute e obtive meu diploma de Bacharel em Engenharia de Som. É uma loucura porque quando me mudei, me senti imediatamente inspirado pelo ambiente da cidade, pelo ritmo de tudo à minha volta… tantos clubes ao redor, tantos live acts que eu queria ver…
De repente, percebi que estava naturalmente passando muito mais tempo no estúdio! Conheci vários amigos, colegas e pessoas que compartilham da mesma paixão que eu e percebi o quanto esse incentivo é saudável para minha criatividade.
Provavelmente seu som também mudou junto com esse novo lifestyle alemão… o que de mais importante você tem absorvido nestes anos morando na “capital do techno”?
Meu som mudou drasticamente nos últimos três anos e meio em Berlim. Acho que, como artista aqui, tenho a chance e a sorte de ver muitas boas apresentações musicais e, em geral, outras formas de arte pela cidade toda semana. Clubes, museus e exposições estão por toda a parte, acontecendo a qualquer dia. É muito bom ter a opção de absorver diferentes tipos de arte pela cidade, isso definitivamente ajuda a abrir minha mente e me mantém inspirado!
Não tenho certeza se foi o som da cidade que mudou meu som, mas com certeza sei que a vibe de Berlim me ajudou a continuar trabalhando duro no estúdio, experimentar coisas novas e a trabalhar mais!
Falando de seu trabalho como produtor, vimos que você possui uma relação de longo prazo com a Be As One, uma label que abraça seu esforço desde 2020. Essa conexão ajudou a impulsionar sua carreira de alguma forma?
O relacionamento que tenho com o Be As One é muito especial para mim. Desde o início ela foi uma gravadora que eu admirava. Minha ligação com Shlomi Aber, o headlabel, é muito forte. Ele é mais do que um colega e um bom amigo próximo para mim, ele é um mentor. Ele sentiu que havia um potencial escondido em algum lugar, então ele me deu a chance de enviar constantemente algumas músicas para ele.
Honestamente, o fato de eu ter recebido tantos nãos dele de volta, apenas me deu um impulso insano para trabalhar mais! Ele investiu muito tempo e esforço em mim, e sempre me deu feedbacks concretos e sugestões sobre minha atitude musical, mixagem, etc. Desde que comecei a trabalhar com Shlomi e a fazer parte da gravadora, sinto pessoalmente que avancei com meu som e sou grato por isso!
Sinceramente, não é fácil para mim escolher um lançamento favorito pela Be As One, pois sinto que meu som melhorou de lançamento para lançamento, mas se eu precisar escolher um, eu diria Intermission EP.
Então, sim, tenho que admitir, a Be As One definitivamente impulsionou minha carreira. Muitos grandes artistas que aprecio de repente começaram a tocar minhas músicas constantemente em seus sets. A gravadora é um verdadeiro lar para minha música e criatividade, e esse fato obviamente me ajuda a ser consistente com meus lançamentos, o que é muito importante para o sucesso.
Sua música tem bastante influência da estética mais old school do techno de Detroit, caminhando para um lado mais mental e industrial. Você diria que seu background como guitarrista em uma banda de Metalcore influencia seu som de hoje? É possível trazer alguns exemplos mais práticos?
Esta é uma descrição resumida muito assertiva do meu estilo de som. Posso dizer claramente que em algumas de minhas produções há influências de Metal-core e Heavy Metal de antigamente! Meu amor pela sujeira e pela estética crua (ao lado da estética limpa que às vezes tenho) é claramente parte de minhas primeiras influências quando criança e jovem adolescente.
O melhor exemplo que posso dar é minha faixa “Hammer Smashed Face”, lançada no ANAOH.
Todo o principal elemento bruto distorcido da faixa é basicamente uma amostra da música “Hammer Smashed Face” da lendária banda americana de Metal, Cannibal Corpse! Eu sampleei uma única parte do baixo na música, e assim consegui aquele caráter cru original do sinal do baixista da banda. Essa é uma forma de deixar minhas antigas influências tomarem conta das minhas produções. Sempre tentando trazer algum personagem de outros gêneros.
Vimos que você teve o suporte da nossa rainha ANNA com a track “Reckless”, que até foi relançada agora em uma compilação da Mixmag Records. O que você conhece a respeito da cena techno brasileira? Acompanha algum artista mais de perto, além da ANNA?
Na verdade eu não conheço muito sobre a cena brasileira local, mas posso dizer claramente que ir para o Brasil e se apresentar lá é um grande sonho meu! Ouvi dizer que o público brasileiro é muito apaixonado por música eletrônica e festas em geral, então será uma verdadeira honra experimentar eu mesmo!
Não conheço muito sobre a cena brasileira, mas posso dizer com certeza que ir e tocar no Brasil é um grande sonho meu. Eu ficaria mais do que feliz em explorar um pouco mais sobre a cena local.
Eu realmente acredito que assim como no Psy-Trance, Goa e outros gêneros eletrônicos, existem muitos bons artistas brasileiros do Techno — por favor, qualquer dica sobre artistas locais será muito bem-vinda! Ouvi dizer que o público brasileiro é muito apaixonado por música eletrônica e festas em geral, então será uma verdadeira honra experimentar eu mesmo.
Fiquei feliz em ver o relançamento de Reckless pela MixMag Records pela ANNA, é sempre um grande prazer quando artistas veteranos apoiam meu trabalho!
Agora falando um pouco sobre seu lado como DJ: vimos que geralmente você toca em lugares mais intimistas. Você prefere essa atmosfera mais próxima do público ou gosta de lugares com mais pessoas?
Como um artista que começou naturalmente como um raver, sempre tive esse amor por pequenas salas íntimas, teto baixo, ótimas luzes e sistema de som. Eu realmente acredito que a parte principal do nosso trabalho como DJs é sentir a energia da multidão e reagir a ela em tempo real!
Às vezes acho um pouco mais difícil fazer isso em salas enormes com um palco muito alto, rostos se transformam em sombras e as pessoas na pista parecem formiguinhas que se movem de um lado para o outro.
Adoro me comunicar com o público da festa, vejo isso como um diálogo entre eles e eu. Eu recebo reações e energia deles na minha frente e deixo meus instintos guiarem, isso é o que me diverte! Mas é claro que continuo gostando de eventos maiores e de qualquer oportunidade de dividir o palco com artistas que aprecio, deixando as pessoas se esquecerem de si mesmas na pista de dança!

2023 está felizmente agendado com os próximos dois EPs ao lado do meu EP Determined, que foi lançado em maio no início deste ano. Tem também um EP solo de vinil e um EP de vinil colaborativo pela primeira vez com Shlomi Aber (próximo lançamento Be As One Vinyl).
É um prazer trabalhar junto com um grande artista e amigo e só posso dizer que há muito mais por vir de nós dois juntos. Este será o lançamento 90 da gravadora, então é realmente emocionante pra mim.
No final do ano, você pode esperar outro lançamento em vinil, Monomm Black, de 10 anos, com alguns grandes artistas na lista. Foi um grande prazer receber este convite de Dax J e mal posso esperar para compartilhar a música com todos.

Hi Kashpitzky. Thank you for accepting this interview with us. You were introduced to us as “one of the hottest rising figures in Techno right now”. In fact, with the growth of the style, we have seen many new players gaining attention. So, in your view, what does it take these days for an artist to stand out from the rest in the midst of this whirlwind of news?
Kashpitzky: Hey guys, thanks a lot for the invitation first of all.
I completely agree, these days there are a lot of great producers, veterans and newcomers. While keeping the real Techno legacy alive, next to all of the bullshit that exists in our scene, it is always nice to see some new names that produce quality Techno, especially from the younger generation in our scene. I appreciate that you define me as an outstanding artist, thank you!
I believe that in order to be an outstanding artist in this game, you have to stay true for yourself and not follow any trends. Our evolution as artists and the way we change is our own story! Having a vision and being critical about my own work, always helps me to work harder in the studio and come up with new ideas. I always try to change and not follow any specific guidelines and I believe it is important for me in order to keep the fire alive.
You’re from Tel Aviv, right? The city (and the country) has a very strong history when we talk about electronic music, it is the hometown of other big names including Trance/Progressive House, such as Astrix, Guy Gerber, Guy J… were you influenced by an artist in specific to your country when you started your career? Was your start directly with Techno or did you experiment with other sounds previously?
The story of Tel Aviv and electronic music started definitely a long time ago, way before I was born. My music background started at an early age as a guitar player. My early music influences were Heavy Rock, Metal-Core, Djent, and everything that consisted of a heavy sound, distortions and groove!
As you mentioned, Trance & Progressive House was very popular in Tel Aviv since the end of the 90s and actually still a big thing till today! I specifically could never find my place in those genres, so I kept focusing on Metal and played in a band called “ The Capital”.
At the age of 17 when I finally started to go out and explore the nightlife scene of Tel Aviv, my first club experience was a moment I will never forget. The club used to be called “Deli”. I had the chance to visit the club only a few times before they shut it down. A small dark room, full of smoke, you can’t even see the face of the DJ. Everyone around me was older of course (it was such a cool feeling for me as a young teenager) listening to that slow minimal Techno, so repetitive, so elegant.
Vibe was insane and I couldn’t fully understand it but I wanted to explore! There were so many clubs back than such as The Block, Alphabet, Breakfast club etc, that gave me the chance to see DJs, live acts etc from the finest artists out there.
I knew immediately what I like, and whatnot. Living in Tel Aviv, gave me the chance to take influences from DJs like DVS1, James Ruskin, Regis and others that used to come and perform in the city regularly every year.
Even though you currently live in Berlin, is there a connection between your music and Israeli culture in any way?
I have to be honest, my sound has not much to do with Israeli culture and sound. The main sound of the city is not really the sound I am representing as a DJ and as a producer. The pure Techno sound in Tel Aviv these days is not more than a niche unfortunately. The main sound of the city can go from House music to Indie dance and Melodic Progressive Techno or House.
There are those few parties in town that give a space for Techno lovers and a stage for the artists, but not like Six or Seven years ago, Techno was a hot trend that pretty much faded away in Israel. But I might say, nightlife in Tel Aviv is truly amazing and I had the chance to listen to some veteran resident DJs in town that played Techno in its purest form!
There are few Israeli DJs and producers that are truly amazing of course but I truly feel that the sounds and inspiration of my production come from out of the city, from European, British or American artists mainly.
And when did this move to Berlin take place? Was the decision thinking about your career as an artist or were there other reasons involved?
I have lived in Berlin now for Three and a half years. Originally I moved in order to study sound engineering which is not really possible in Tel Aviv. I graduated in SAE Institute and got my Sound Engineer Bachelor degree.
It’s crazy because when I moved, I felt immediately inspired by the environment of the city, the pace of everything around me… So many clubs around,so many music acts I wanted to see. I suddenly realized that I’m naturally spending way more time in the studio! I met so many friends, colleagues and people that share the same passion as me, and I realized how healthy this environment is for my creativity.
Probably your sound has also changed along with this new German lifestyle… what is the most important thing you have absorbed in these years living in the “capital of techno”?
My sound changed drastically in the past Three and a half years in Berlin. I think that as an artist in Berlin, I have the chance to see so many good musical acts and in general other art forms on a weekly basis around the city. Clubs, Museums and exhibitions are all around the city on any day of the week.
This is so good to have the option to absorb different art mediums around the city, it definitely helps to open my mind, and it keeps me inspired! I’m not sure that the sound of the city is what changed my sound, but I am sure that the vibe of the city helped me to keep on working hard in the studio, try some new things and work harder!
Speaking of your work as a producer, we saw that you have a long-term relationship with Be As One, a label that has embraced your efforts since 2020. Has this connection helped boost your career in any way? What’s your favorite release on the label?
Oh wow, the relationship I have with Be As One is very special for me. Since the very beginning, Be As One was a label I looked up to. My connection with Shlomi Aber, the label boss, is very strong. He is more than a colleague and a good close friend for me – he is a mentor. He felt that there is a potential hidden somewhere inside so he gave me the chance to constantly send music to him.
Honestly, the fact I got so many no’s from him back then, just gave me an insane drive to work harder! He invested a lot of time and effort in me, and always gave me concrete feedback and inputs about my musical attitude, mixing, etc. Since I started to work with Shlomi, and be part of the label, I feel personally that I have just moved forward with my sound, I am grateful for that!
It is honestly not so easy for me to choose a favorite release on Be As One as I feel that my sound improved from release to release, but if I need to choose one favorite release on the label, I would say Reckless EP or Intermission EP. I have to admit, Be As One definitely boosted my career! Many big artists I appreciate suddenly started to play my music constantly in their sets. The label is a real home for my music and creativity, and this fact of course helps me to be consistent with my releases which is very important for success.
Your music is heavily influenced by the older school aesthetics of Detroit techno, moving towards a more mental and industrial side. Would you say that your background as a guitarist in a Metalcore band influences your sound today? Is it possible to bring some practical examples?
This is a very accurate short description of my sound. I can clearly say that in some of my productions there are influences of Metal-core and heavy metal from back in the days!
My love for dirtiness and raw aesthetic (next to the clean aesthetic I sometimes have) is clearly part of my early influences as a kid and young teenager. Best example I can give is my track “Hammer Smashed Face” released on ANAOH. The whole main distorted raw element of the track is basically a sample from the song “Hammer Smashed Face” by the legendary American Metal band – Cannibal Corpse!
I sampled only the bass part in the song, and that way I got that original raw character of the signal from the bass player of the band. This is one way to let my old influences take place in my productions. Always trying to bring some character from other genres.
We saw that you had the support of our queen ANNA with the track “Reckless”, which has even been re-released now on a Mixmag Records compilation. What do you know about the Brazilian techno scene? Do you follow any artist more closely, besides ANNA?
I don’t know so much about the local Brazilian scene, but I can clearly say that coming to Brazil and performing there is a big dream of mine. I would be more than happy to explore a bit more about the local scene.
I truly believe that just like in Psy-Trance, Goa and other electronic genres, there are many good Brazilian Techno artists. Please, any tips about local artists will be appreciated! I’ve heard that the Brazilian crowd is very passionate about Electronic music and partying in general, so it will be a true honor to experience it myself.
I was happy to see Reckless re-release on MixMag Records by ANNA, it’s always a big pleasure when veteran artists support my work!
Now talking a little about your side as a DJ: we saw that you usually play in more intimate places. Do you prefer this atmosphere closer to the public or do you like places with more people?
As an artist that started of course as a raver, I always had that love for small intimate rooms, low ceilings, great lights and great sound system. I truly believe that the main part of our job as DJs is to feel the energy of the crowd and react to it in real time! I find it sometimes a bit harder to do it in massive rooms with a very high stage. Faces turn into shadows and the people on the dancefloor look like small ants that are moving from side to side.
I love to communicate with the crowd in the party, I see it like a dialogue between them and myself. I get reactions and certain energy from the crowd in front of me and I’m letting my instincts lead, that’s the whole fun! But I still of course enjoy bigger events and any opportunity to share the stage with artists I appreciate and let the people forget themselves on the dance floor!

2023 is happily fully scheduled with two upcoming EP’s next to my EP Determined that was released in May earlier this year. One solo vinyl EP and one collab vinyl EP for the first time with Shlomi Aber together (Next Be As One Vinyl release). Such a pleasure to work together with such a great artist and friend and I will just say that there is a lot more to come from both of us together. This is gonna be the 90’s release of the label so it’s really exciting!
End of the year you can expect the 10 years Monomm Black vinyl release with some great artists on the list. It was a great pleasure to get this invitation from Dax J and I can’t wait to share the music with everyone.
